LANCASTER – The state’s Law Enforcement Division is investigating a police shooting that allegedly took place after an officer clashed with a man during a traffic stop.

No one was hit by gunfire and no injuries were reported, SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby said. Officers are still looking for the suspect, who fled after the confrontation.

A Lancaster police officer was monitoring traffic when a red vehicle was seen driving recklessly, police spokeswoman Kayla Vaughn said in a written statement. From there she said the scene went this way:

The officer caught up with the vehicle and realized that the registration tag matched a vehicle that had fled law enforcement a week earlier. The officer attempted to approach the driver when the vehicle stopped, but the man allegedly tried to hit him with the automobile.

The policeman fired his pistol at the vehicle. The suspect then went to a yard near University Drive and fled.

Other officers and detectives from the Lancaster Police Department and Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. SLED was also informed, as is the practice of the department with all police shootings.

Authorities are asking community members to avoid University Drive, Mungo Road and Riverside Road, if possible, while police search for the suspect, Vaughn said.

The incident marked the 27th police shootout in South Carolina in 2021. Last year there were 49 police shootings in South Carolina; none involved the Lancaster Police Department.

Anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the suspect can call the Lancaster Police Department at 803-283-3313.
