Small equipment grant program funds 29 proposals in 2021

The Research office announced that the Small Equipment Grants Program funded 29 proposals for 2021.

The program is designed to build research capacity and capacity at Syracuse University. These scholarships aim to bridge the gap between major research equipment funded by extramural grants (and requests for equipment under individual research project grants) and small items often purchased through research accounts of institutions. faculties. As the program is intended to support equipment not available under traditional medium and large scale equipment grant programs from extramural donors, preference is given to equipment proposals between $ 5,000 and $ 100,000.

“This year’s winners represent a wide range of research and creation disciplines and will initiate research and scholarship in fields ranging from environmental sciences to art and music,” said Ramesh Raina, Acting Vice President for Research.

Small equipment grants in 2021 include equipment such as an acoustic recording network for studies of the acoustic behavior of marine mammals, a snowpack analyzer to support flood forecasting and remote sensing research, medium format digital camera, an ultrapure water purification system, a large transient current scanning technique system, a terrestrial LIDAR scanner and an automated histology system for processing, embedding and cutting of tissue based on paraffin.

Professors who receive grants represent the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, School of Education, and College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Small Equipment Grants Program pays 100% of the first $ 25,000 in equipment costs. For equipment costs between $ 25,000 and $ 50,000, the costs are shared equally between the grant program and the department, school or college, with a maximum grant of $ 37,500 from the Bureau of research. The minimum amount for an Equipment Reward request is $ 5,000.

The Small Equipment Grant Program was established in 2019. To date, the program has funded 61 projects.
