Smithsonian Channel Creates Augmented Reality Game For Apollo Moon Landing Fans

Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin had to travel about 384,400 kilometers (238,855 miles) to land on the moon, but a new mobile application brings the moon directly into your garden.

Smithsonian Channel recently released an immersive Augmented Reality (AR) application that recreates the complete timeline of Apollo missions, allowing users to relive the story by themselves.

"It was important that we do justice to the story," Charles Poe, vice president of production at Smithsonian Channel, told Space.com.

The app "Apollo's Moon Shot AR" is based on the six-part television series of the chain, "Apollo's Moon Shot," which follows the route of the program of landing on the moon. The game is an extension of the stories told in the series, according to Poe, using augmented reality to get people into the story.

And people are literally brought there. With their mobile phone or tablet, players can set up a portal to the Moon wherever they are, jump into the projection and move into a new world where they can wander and explore their surroundings.

Once on the moon, users can choose their own missions: fly the Apollo landing gear to the moon's surface, launch a Saturn V rocket or launch a rocket from Earth to the moon without running out of fuel. .

"You want it to be difficult, at the height of true success," said Poe.

Using RA tools created in collaboration with Immersion, a European company specializing in this type of technology, the Smithsonian Channel team recreated as precisely as possible the lunar surface and the surrounding artifacts.

The Smithsonian experts reviewed the game's programming to ensure that the scenarios created were true to reality.

"It's one of the things that sets us apart," Poe said. "We wanted to make sure to give viewers a different perspective by creating this specific scenario."

The application is available through the iOS app store and on Google Play.
