The second half of the 2021 Oakcliff Triple Crown Series was held for eight 49er teams on October 2-3 in Oyster Bay, NY. With over $ 35,000 in purses on the table, Nevin Snow (San Diego, CA) and Nic Muller (Ft. Pierce, FL) won seven of eight races to claim first place.

The teams experienced light conditions on both days, with 5 to 10 knots on the first day and 5 to 6 knots on the second day. Chris and Duncan Williford (Fort Lauderdale, FL) were second and Charlie Hibben (Cape Cod, MA) and Scott Rasmussen (Fort Myers, FL) third.

“We’ve done a good job keeping in touch with the other top boats,” said Snow. “Rather than taking risks, we sailed cautiously. We also had excellent downwind speed to get in the lead.

The Triple Crown is not only meant to help teams establish themselves with funding, but also to raise the overall standard of Olympic sailing in the United States.

Athletes rely on grants earned at the Oakcliff Triple Crown to fund their campaigns between training blocks. This was Snow and Muller’s first regatta as team training for the Olympics, so they plan to use their grant money to hone their skills together by training in Florida.

“A lot of the teams here, including us, are newer to the 49er so the grant will go towards making this winter’s training block as successful as possible,” said Snow. “This will help us purchase the new 49er class masts and sails so that we can compete at the top of our game.”
