PHOENIX – Public Security Ministry officials are investigating after authorities said a soldier was intentionally hit by a vehicle and then fired his gun.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning on Interstate 17 northbound on the Cactus Road turnoff.

DPS says it started when a soldier spotted a gray sedan on the I-17 traveling at over 100 miles per hour.

The soldier tried to stop the sedan as it exited I-17 on Cactus Road.

The driver of the sedan went through a traffic light, lost control and took off, according to DPS.

At that point, the driver got out of the vehicle and fled.

The soldier began to chase the person when the driver of a second vehicle, a white Chevrolet Tahoe, struck the soldier with the vehicle.

According to DPS, the person fleeing the scene jumped into the Tahoe.

“Fearing for his life,” the soldier fired his gun at the driver of the Tahoe as he drove away on Cactus Road, DPS officials said.

The soldier was taken to hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Phoenix Police Department officers later discovered the Tahoe near 19th Avenue and Cactus Road.

The Tahoe driver, identified as an adult female in her late teens, was taken into custody and taken to hospital with serious injuries sustained by the soldier’s gunfire.

DPS said the driver of the sedan has not been located.

As the investigation continues, the I-17 north exit ramp and Cactus, as well as Cactus eastbound from I-17, will remain closed.
