A motorcyclist was seriously injured and his passenger died after an accident shortly after noon Sunday just off I-275 at Gandy Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 44-year-old man from Belle Fourche, South Carolina, was heading south on I-275 into the inside lane. His passenger was a 49-year-old woman from Fort Myers.

Another vehicle, an SUV, driven by a 60-year-old man from Auburndale, slowed down for traffic in front of the rider. The motorcyclist did not slow down or stop, causing him to crash into the back of the SUV.

The man and woman on the motorbike were thrown onto the road. The two were taken to a nearby hospital. The woman later died. The man was seriously injured.

None of the motorcycle occupants wore helmets.

The driver of the SUV and three passengers were not injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol did not disclose the names of the man and woman involved in the crash due to its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, an amendment to the state Constitution.
