The Buffalo Sabers will play a match against a team with a different logo for the first time since last May tomorrow night. Buffalo opens its six-game preseason schedule tomorrow night against the Columbus Blue Jackets in Columbus. The delivery of the puck is scheduled for 7 p.m.
With such a young team with a handful of new faces, it will be interesting to see what the lines for the Sabers look like tomorrow night in the first game of the preseason. Three names that we know won’t make the list tomorrow night in Columbus are Josh Bloom, Viljami Marjala and Olivier Nadeau. The team announced this morning that the three players have been sent back to their junior clubs.
As there are a lot of young players fighting for roster spots at Buffalo this preseason, the tightest battle in camp and preseason may include some of the older players on the squad. . It seems, for now at least, that Craig anderson and Aaron Dell are likely to be the goaltenders for the Sabers’ opening night roster, but it remains to be seen which one will start.
With Dell and Anderson appearing to be Sabers goaltenders to start the season, that leaves Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen outside watching the Sabers roster on opening night. After making his NHL debut last season and playing four games before being injured, it looks like UPL will at least start this season in Rochester playing for the Americans.
But it seems like a safe bet that UPL will eventually be back in Buffalo this season, especially later in the season, as Dell and Anderson are only one-year deals with Buffalo. If the Sabers don’t plan to bring one back after this season, then their plans will likely include UPL in Buffalo for the foreseeable future.
