Update 6:30 p.m .: Both W University Avenue southbound and one northbound lane are open due to a gas leak.
This gas leak has been stopped and the crews are working to repair the line.
Lafayette Hazmat and LFD responded to the University’s 1700 block for a gas leak around 11:30 a.m. Friday morning. Atmos Energy was on site to verify a customer complaint about the smell of gas. On site, responders discovered that a service line was leaking underground.
Electrical service in the area has been temporarily cut off as a safety measure. Three houses near the gas line were evacuated as a precaution, an LCG spokesperson said.
The university was closed between the intersection of N University Ave and Silkwood Street and N University and Southdown Place.
