Sony files patent for bandwidth management technology

Sony Interactive has filed a new patent for its PlayStation technologies, the latter relating to bandwidth management. The patent has been discussed on Reddit and Twitter, where several users have given their opinions on the “new” technology and what it could bring to PlayStation consoles.

Browsing through the home page, it appears that this bandwidth management patent relates to certain “profiles” that differ in their priority for the overall bandwidth of a player’s Internet connection. For example, one could prioritize downloading a game over its own current online gaming lobby (or vice versa), as well as different download bandwidths of games downloaded at the same time. Multiple profiles could then be created, all satisfying different situations, such as something you will likely use while playing (lower bandwidth for game downloads) and the like.

What is certainly interesting is that this technology, although patent pending, is certainly not new. This is a feature called “Quality of Service” (QOS); Xbox, for example, already has a system in place that lets you prioritize certain games for higher bandwidth. On PC, most often Steam, you can limit the download speeds of other games in order to prioritize others, which is overall a great feature to have if you still want to download something while playing online.

While some reviewers have said that this technology has nothing to do with overall latency but only with download bandwidth itself, the patent filing appears to differ. Section 37, page 4 of the document describes “peak prediction”, although it is used in a sample involving media playback. Overall, the patent is intriguing and looks to Sony and PlayStation perhaps making it a natural development for their current and future consoles.

Thanks Reddit!
