Sony has been talking about synergy between its divisions for more than a decade, but it is finally the case. You will no doubt be aware of the various collaborations between PlayStation and Sony Pictures, which will see The last of us adapted into a live action series. But direct your gaze to the organization’s marketing campaign for its latest line of Bravia XR televisions: they’re billed, literally, as “perfect for PlayStation 5”.
What makes these panels ideal for gamers, then? Well, they actually add a bunch of PS5-specific features: auto HDR tone mapping and auto genre picture mode. The former will automatically calibrate your console and TV for peak performance when you plug it all in, so you won’t have to mess around with menus or google for the best settings. That’s a minor convenience in the grand scheme of things, we assume, but should help less savvy users.
In the meantime, here’s what Auto Genre Picture mode does: “The TV automatically switches to game mode when you play games, which minimizes input lag to make the action more responsive, or to standard mode when watching movies.” via a streaming service or from an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. ray disc on the PS5, which shifts the focus to image processing for a more expressive picture. Presumably, you’ll be able to disable all of this if you still prefer to configure things yourself.
The features will be available on the Z9J, A90J, A80J, X95J and X90J models from the Bravia XR range. These displays share a new “cognitive processor,” which Sony says “works much like our eyes, detecting the main focal point of a scene and enhancing every detail of an object so that it stands out with a natural sense of depth “. For the layman, the panels will support up to 120 frames per second in crisp 4K, with input lag as low as 6.0ms.
The press release mentions that features specific to the PS5 will be added as part of a software update by the end of January 2022, and you will need to make sure your console and TV are running the correct version in order to benefit.
