Source: Washington to hire Martin Mayhew; 49ers to secure 2023 draft pick

The 49ers promote diversity in leadership roles and it has been beneficial in more ways than one.

49ers executive Martin Mayhew is set to become the next general manager of the Washington football team, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area on Thursday.

ESPN John Keim first reported news of Mayhew hired by Washington.

Mayhew has spent the past four seasons with the 49ers, two as vice president of player personnel and the previous two years (2017-18) as a senior manager of team personnel.

Prior to his stint with the 49ers, Mayhew spent time with the New York Giants (2016) and Detroit Lions (2001-2015) as an executive. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1988 as a cornerback before playing for Washington (1898-1992) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993-1996), where he played alongside the general manager of the 49ers, John Lynch.

Earlier this week, former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was officially announced as the head coach of the New York Jets. The 49ers will be compensated for both promotions of minority applicants for leadership positions as part of the NFL’s efforts to promote diversity in hiring.

For every hire of a minority candidate for a leadership position, the home club is expected to receive two third-round compensatory picks that will occur over two consecutive seasons. The 49ers will receive a selection in 2021 and the second in 2022 for Saleh being hired as head coach.

If a club has of them minority candidates hired in one year, they will not receive a third round compensatory choice for second rental. This selection would take place in the third consecutive season, which for the 49ers, will take place in 2023.

(Had Mayhew been hired in 2022, the 49ers would have received two third-round compensatory selections that would occur in 2023 and 2024.)

These picks will be in addition to the regularly awarded compensatory picks a club would receive for losing free agent players, so there will be more than the 256 standard draft picks in future NFL drafts.

Here is the resolution in full:

RESOLUTION JC-2A 2020

Whereas, member clubs believe that policies designed to promote equal employment opportunity and a diverse and inclusive workforce advance important league interests, including improved decision-making, improved business performance and representation of the NFL as an employer of choice that hires and promotes on merit; and

Whereas member clubs have adopted policies spanning decades to achieve these goals, including policies designed to enable the upward mobility and advancement of club employees, particularly those in coaching and football operations; and

Whereas member clubs believe it is appropriate to take further steps to improve employment and promotion opportunities for minorities and women in key positions, including leadership roles in coaching, staff and football operations,

Be it resolved that the League’s policy on equality in employment and diversity in the workplace be amended as follows:

(i) The employer club of a minority employee who has been hired by another club as a head coach or chief football officer (general manager) will receive draft pick pay in the form of a draft pick. Compensatory draft in the third round of each of the next two drafts for an employee hired as a head coach or senior football executive, or for the next three drafts if two employees are hired for both positions. The reference to hiring employees in “two positions” could be made by the same club or by different clubs. The following will apply to the compensation for the choice of the project:

a. Any compensatory draft picks awarded in accordance with this policy will be at the end of the third round after all compensatory draft picks awarded to clubs in accordance with Appendix V of the NFL-NFLPA Collective Agreement.

b. If more than one club are assigned compensating draft picks in accordance with this policy, the order of those picks at the end of the third round will follow the original selection order for that draft established before any trade or other adjustment.

(ii) The employer-club is eligible to receive this project choice allowance if:

a. The minority employee hired as a head coach or senior football manager has been employed by the employing club for at least two full seasons; and

b. The minority employee is not the head coach or senior football manager of the employing club and is hired in the same position with the new club. There can be no disruption of work between clubs.
