– A woman in British Columbia was awoken on the night of October 4 to a crashing noise and the sensation of debris hitting her face. Ruth Hamilton looked up to see a hole in her ceiling and a stone on her pillow and called 911, not knowing what had happened. The truth turned out to be stranger than the fiction: A meteor was hovering over the area that night, and authorities concluded that it must have been part of it that broke off and passed through Hamilton’s rooftop, Victoria News reports.

“We called the Canyon Project to see if they were blasting and they weren’t, but they said they saw a bright light in the sky that exploded and caused booms,” said Hamilton, explaining how authorities ruled out possible debris from a nearby construction project as the cause of the incident. The Star of the day reports that she is lucky the fist-sized space rock didn’t kill her, having only narrowly missed her head. Hamilton says she’ll keep the meteorite because her grandchildren think it’s neat. As for the damage caused to his house, his insurance company is checking and will have to determine if the damage caused by space debris is covered by his policy.
