This French wine is truly out of this world.
The SpaceX capsule will bring a case of Bordeaux back to Earth when it splashes on Wednesday – and it’s no ordinary wine after aging in space for over a year.
The intoxicating cargo was shipped to the International Space Station in November 2019 as part of an experiment launched by a Luxembourg-based startup.
“Our goal is to find a solution to have tomorrow an agriculture that is both organic, healthy and capable of feeding humanity,” said Nicolas Gaume, co-founder of Space Cargo Unlimited.
“And we think space was the key,” he said.
Besides, Gaume added, future explorers of the Moon or Mars may want a little Cabernet Sauvignon with their space rations.
“Being French is part of life to have good food and good wine,” he explains.
All 12 bottles were corked and carefully packaged in steel cylinders to prevent breakage.
They are part of a larger shipment that includes 320 Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vine extracts sent to space in March and several mice.
Bottled wine will remain sealed at least until next month, when one or two will be opened for tasting in Bordeaux – followed by months of chemical testing to determine the space’s impact on the expensive grape juice.
The SpaceX Dragon capsule is expected to splash on Wednesday night.
