CAP CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – A SpaceX rocket booster that landed on an ocean platform after launching its plane last week was damaged by rough seas.
For the first time, the three first-phase thrusters landed after Thursday's launch of the Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket in service. The two secondary propellers returned to Cape Canaveral, Florida, while the main propeller landed on a platform hundreds of kilometers off the coast.
The company confirmed on Tuesday that the unsecured central thruster had rolled over the platform over the weekend, while the waves reached 10 to 20 meters.
SpaceX chief Elon Musk said the engines appeared to be doing well. There is no immediate word on the number of reminder pieces remaining on board.
Musk said the custom devices to secure the booster were not ready in time for this second flight of the Falcon Heavy.
