SpaceX will have people living in glass domes on Mars, before terraforming

Science fiction movies have already shown us what life could be like on other planets, but Elon Musk is determined to truly make space colonization a reality. Mars will have a human colony during our lifetime.

Earlier this week, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla took to Twitter to answer some questions from his followers and supporters, as he’s known to do. Among them was a couple regarding his plans for the Starship missions to establish colonies on the Red Planet and how that would fit in with the terraforming plans.

The colony would come first, Musk replied.

“Life in the early glass domes. Eventually terraformed to support life, like Earth, ” wrote the CEO. “Terraforming will be too slow to be relevant in our life. However, we can establish a human base there in our lifetime. At least one future space civilization – discovering our ruins – will be impressed by humans.

Last month, Musk said he expected the first Starship mission to launch in 2026, carrying around 100 people. He had previously referred to Mars as a “fixator of a planet” that could be transformed into a new Earth, once our existing planet was destroyed by our actions and a possible Third World War.

Earlier this week, a special section of Starlink’s Beta Customer Service Terms, titled “Applicable laws”, confirmed what Musk had said on various channels about how Mars would be exempt from Earth’s laws.

By declaring Mars a “Free planet”, Musk says whoever sets foot in it first will be the one who decides the laws that govern him – and as he’s currently working to make that happen, he’s setting the stage to be the one to do it. Call it the perks of being an innovator / revolutionary / genius, if you will.
