Spectacular aerial photos capture the dramatic scenes unfolding as Icelandic volcano erupts

Photographer Thrainn Kolbeinsson has camped on the Reykjanes Peninsula in recent days to document the long-awaited eruption of the Icelandic volcano Fagradalsfjall. After approximately 50,000 earthquakes and nearly 6,000 years since its last occurrence, the landform of Geldingadalur, located about 20 miles from Reykjavík, has been transformed into a scorching scene of molten lava, ash and explosives splashing across the sky. sky – the setting is so dramatic and eerie that the internet has even started to compare it to Mordor.

Kolbeinsson says that after a few days of calm, “the Earth suddenly opened up and the night sky turned red,” erupting into a mass of flaming lava lurking across the charred landscape. “Although it may sound terrifying, it was actually a beautiful experience to watch the violent spit from the volcano quickly transform into streams of incandescent lava as a new earth was born. Every day the region has changed and at this rate the whole valley will fill up in 10 to 20 days, ”he writes.
