In 2016, when Porsche launched the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, the consensus was that it was excellent two-seater sports cars, but the four-cylinder engine exhaust note Turbo left a little to be desired. The previous iteration with a six folded step was a dream for the enthusiasts. Although it is faster, and apparently better than its predecessor, the 718 does not have the sound commitment that Porsche nerds like me wanted.

All of this is about to reset when these so-called 718 Boxster Touring and 718 Cayman Touring models are marketed. Both models have been tested at the Nürburgring and the technical data sheet is fantastic. Similar to the GT3 Touring concept, the 718 Touring should be a lighter version of their sportier siblings, the 718 Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4, still unofficial.

As you can see in this series of spy spies, Touring models are essentially ready for prime time with body panels and wheels ready for production. Both models have the same rear diffuser and exhaust configurations as their Spyder and GT4, but their front fascia is specific to Touring and the Boxster version obviously does not have the stealth roof of the Spyder. Both are equipped with Porsche Carbon Ceramic brakes.

All of this is very good news for mid-engine Porsche enthusiasts, as the last GT4 and Spyder race was exceptional. Personally, I preferred the Boxster Spyder for its softer suspension configuration, which favors the road, in the street, compared to the stiffness focused on the track and the GT3 GT4. It is good that a version of the six-cylinder models more road-oriented and seemingly more affordable (but not yet cheap) be built.

And really, if something was missing at Porsche, it was new model variants. This range will allow the 718 buyer to choose from the basic models, T, S, GTS, Touring and Spyder / GT4. That should be enough, right?
