Ohio State returned to the winning column with a 41-20 victory over Tulsa at Ohio Stadium on Saturday night.

A plethora of Buckeyes met with members of the media after the game to discuss the performance, starting with quarterback CJ Stroud, head coach Ryan Day, running back TreVeyon Henderson and a number of others players in attack and defense.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of everything that was said in the post-match press conference.

QB CJ Stroud

  • “Winning is not easy, but Tulsa, we knew it was a good team to come.” Stroud said Buckeye’s offense “got greedy” against the Golden Hurricane defense.

  • Stroud says he does

  • “Certainly not 100 percent, but who is 100 percent right now.” Stroud says he was “healthy enough to play.”

  • Stroud says he does what coaches tell him in terms of reading. Said he has to watch the movie, but thinks he did well in this regard.

  • “We already knew he was special… showed the whole nation today.” Stroud on Henderson.

  • Stroud says Tulsa’s 3-3-5 defense was tricky, but Buckeye’s offense “certainly should have been better.”

  • “Every game is a learning aspect for me. I’m only 19 and playing as a rookie redshirt… I don’t worry about the negativity, I focus on the positive. And I have it. feel like a great player. ”

  • Stroud says he thanks God for being allowed to play today given his apparent shoulder injury. Stroud says he likes to think of himself as a “badass”.

  • On what the perfect balance of offense would look like, Stroud says he needs to do his job better and that the Buckeyes would be the “best offense in the country” if they could find the perfect balance.

Ryan day

  • Day says it was great to see the defense get the late sack and Martinez’s interception. Says there is still room for improvement, however.

  • Day says Matt Barnes called the game defensively. “I thought we had stopped the race better and I thought we had mixed up some looks… I thought we had changed some things structurally.” Day says the mid-game adjustments were “much better.”

  • Day says when Henderson gets to tier two he gives the Buckeye offense the chance to hit home runs.

  • “We have to stop with the penalties.” Day cites the high volume of “young guys” the Buckeyes are playing right now.

  • On Sevyn Banks: “He’s training a lot better … we’ll rate the movie and go from there.”

  • “I would love to see a bit more of the pass rush… we have to do a better job of making the quarterback uncomfortable.”

  • Miyan Williams missed a practice session this week because he “wasn’t feeling well,” and Day says he was riding the hot hand at Henderson today.

  • Day says he’s not usually in defensive meetings, but has been this week.

  • Staying patient with Stroud, Day says “he sure missed a few.” Day said Chris Olave’s fall in the second half was unfortunate. “He’s learning, he’s growing, it’s his third start.”

  • Does Matt Barnes call defense a permanent move? “It’s kind of the way I see it at the moment.” Day says Larry Johnson is also very involved.

  • Day says Kerry Coombs “is a professional” when it comes to letting Barnes call the defense.

  • Day says he feels “as always, relieved” after the victory.

  • Day says today was a step in the right direction, but he doesn’t know how much of a step it was. “Hopefully we can reach a peak as we get into the conference game.”

  • “I thought they were tenacious today… overall, pretty good.” Defense day.

  • On Henderson: “Every running back is different, but he’s a guy who can hit home runs. It’s special.”

  • Day says he hopes to get Zach Harrison back to training next week.

  • Thayer Munford’s injury “doesn’t look long-term,” Day said.

  • “It’s exciting to see a guy like Cam Martinez return a touchdown,” Denzel Burke also quotes when discussing the Buckeyes freshmen in defense. Says the future is “really, really bright”.

SAF Ronnie Hickman, DB Cameron Martinez, CB Cam Brown

  • Martinez says he had “all the confidence in the world” that he could play the big game in the end. Said he did “whatever the coaches wanted me to do” and the Buckeyes were very successful.

  • Brown on dropping over 400 yards in the passing game says the Buckeyes will need to tighten up some things after watching the movie.

  • Brown said the team “have sorted out a lot of outside noise” after criticism following last week’s loss.

  • What was different with Coombs in the box? Hickman says “not really … I wouldn’t say it was a big change.”

  • Hickman on playing two deep safes: “Myself, Bryson and the other safes did a good job, but we have to do better.”

  • Martinez says a lot of the young guys doing plays is “something we always talk about”. Martinez said the coaching staff told him to stay prepared and that he had “had fun” playing today.

  • Brown says he started to feel comfortable in his role during his second role. Martinez says Brown was his “mentor and role model” for this season.

  • Brown says he “never feels satisfied” and looks forward to being tested downline even more as the season progresses.

RB TreVeyon Henderson, LT Nicholas Petit-Frere

  • Henderson on if he thought this type of performance would be possible so soon: “I wasn’t expecting something like this.” However, Henderson says he achieved one of his goals that he wrote down ahead of today’s season.

  • Petit-Frere says Henderson is “probably one of the best players we have here.”

  • Henderson: “We all worked hard this week, but I didn’t expect to have a lot of litters. I ended up having a lot.”

  • Henderson says he’s never met Archie Griffin, but he’s watched a lot of movies about him. “I watched a lot of former Ohio State players.”

  • “Losing Thayer is a big loss,” says Petit-Frere, “things like that happen,” and Matt Jones did a great job replacing him.

  • Henderson says he had no idea he would start today until today’s game.

  • Henderson says he felt like his knee “almost broke” when Tulsa’s nose tackle fell on it in the second half. “If he had been there a little longer my knee probably would have gone through.”

  • One of Henderson’s goals is to break the single-season freshman racing record at Ohio State, he says.

  • Henderson: “I’m excited right now, but at the same time, I have to keep going like this. It can’t be a one-time thing.”

  • Petit-Frere says Dawand Jones was “competing with his butt,” and says the performance from the offensive line confirmed how hungry the team was after the loss.

  • Henderson says when he looks into the eyes of the older players on the team, “I can see how badly they want it.”

  • Petit-Frere says Henderson is “probably one of the hardest workers we have.” Says it is “nice to see all his hard work and all his efforts being rewarded”.

  • Henderson says his ability to hit homers is “just natural,” and says his best shot of the game was probably getting his knee out of the pile.
