CJ Stroud

In their most successful performance of the season, Ohio State beat Maryland 66-17 on Saturday.

Immediately after the home win at Ohio Stadium, Buckeye quarterback CJ Stroud, head coach Ryan Day and others stepped onto the podium for post-game interviews.

Here’s a full rundown of the Buckeyes’ post-game commentary.

QB CJ Stroud

  • On her performance: “Being more comfortable, being myself, really just relaxing there.” Stroud said the Buckeyes are “starting to roll, to gain momentum”.

  • “My shoulder is doing a lot better. Every day I rehabilitate it just to make sure nothing goes wrong… two games now, we have no turnaround.”

  • “If they want to stop the race, we have things in the passing game that will work.” Stroud says the Buckeyes have a well-rounded offense right now.

  • “I really think we’re starting to ride, we’re really getting used to each other.”

  • “When you try to force things, that’s usually when bad things happen.”

  • On one of the best offensives in the country: “We still have a lot of work to do. I really think we are cranking up the numbers and doing the right things … If we can be the best offensive in the country, I think it is. something that we can achieve. ”

  • Stroud on WR body: “I’m so glad and happy that all of my receivers ate today.”

  • Stroud says nothing about his game has changed, he has just become more comfortable.

  • Stroud says it took him a few games to “feel the love and feel the hate” from the Ohio State fans.

Ryan day

  • “I think it’s a young team that is growing, I think we are more aggressive, I think we are building some confidence.”

  • On the receiving body: “The staff certainly help… the games are much better when you have those kinds of players there.”

  • “I have to give Emeka credit because her day-to-day approach has been very mature. Not like a freshman.”

  • On Stroud: “I think his preparation has been excellent … it allows us to lead the attack and be efficient.” Day says Stroud is “absolutely not” there yet, however.

  • On Haskell Garrett’s injury: “We’ll see. It’s something he had to deal with. Hopefully we can heal him during the week off.”

  • Day says Kerry Coombs got the ball for Ohio State today.

  • On Stroud: “He’s going to have to make sure he’s stable.” Day says he must “stay hungry”.

  • Day says the players may not have been convinced “the guy next to them could do it” at the start of the season. Now, however, Day says “there is a different look in our eyes”.

  • Day says he’s unable to assess how good Stroud’s performance was today, and that it’s something he will have to revisit after the season.

  • Day says the way Stroud sees the pitch is the best thing he does.

  • Day says the Buckeyes’ 17-game opening practice “was like a 25-game practice.” Day says the offense was “a little awkward” on the first ride.

  • Day says Al Washington did a great job of getting the guys into linebacker roles. Day says the LBs are a “very serious bunch” but have been having more fun on the pitch lately.

  • Day says the change in look in high school led to a better pass rush.

WR Emeka Egbuka, WR Chris Olave, S Marcus Williamson

  • Olave says he is “not really surprised” to have been so open to several pieces today due to the preparation of those pieces.

  • Olave says the Ohio State offense is “unstoppable” when the running game and the passing game click at the same time.

  • Egbuka says he thinks he’ll end a comeback with a touchdown soon after not quite entering the end zone on a few big plays in the last few games.

  • Williamson says “I was born and raised in Ohio … to be able to show that passion and energy on the pitch, it means the world to me.”

  • Olave: “This offense is going to be frightening and unstoppable.” Olave says the Buckeyes have been “almost perfect” the last few games. Olave says Ohio State corrected mistakes.

  • Scoring despite PI’s penalty on Maryland, Olave says the pass was a bit behind him, but he was determined to make the play.

  • Williamson says the Buckeyes are able to “hook up and play guys” safely, and that “helps the defense and the team.”

  • Egbuka says his mindset is to return every kick for a TD.

LB Steele Chambers & LB Cody Simon

  • Chambers says it’s clear Ohio State is playing “a lot more energetically” on defense.

  • Simon “can’t say enough about our guys” after the improvement that has been made over the past few weeks.

  • Chambers says “it takes a lot of heart” to bounce back from a deflated loss like Ohio State experienced in Week 2, and “we definitely have that heart.”

  • Simon says Coombs has “been through a lot” but he’s “stayed through and is still doing his thing”.

  • Simon says Chambers is going at full speed “no matter what” every day in practice.

  • “I was not surprised at all.” Simon says Chambers was already among the best players on special teams before moving to LB.

  • Was the transition to LB as easy as it sounds? “Certainly not,” says Chambers.

  • Chambers on the team’s reaction to Coombs getting the ball: “Everyone was excited. I don’t know how else you could really feel.”
