A unique mass was held Thursday evening at the Saint-Pierre Catholic Church. Filling the rows of benches were not only regular attendees of the weekly service, but also officers from the LaGrange Police Department and Troup County Sheriff’s Office and paramedics, still dressed in full uniforms after a day of job.
The service was the church’s annual Blue Mass, a time to honor the region’s first responders, whether or not they were members of the Catholic faith.
This year’s service also paid tribute to the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the first responders who lost their lives that day, as well as the families of those left behind and those who continue to to serve.
“… When I hear sirens in the community, I always say a prayer for the paramedics and firefighters who always do an outstanding job,” said church pastor Father Tim Gadziala.
LPD leader Lou Dekmar gave the first service reading of Romans 12: 1-2, which speaks of offering one’s body as a “living sacrifice”.
During the service, Gadziala gave the soldiers blessed prayer cards of Saint Michael. Saint Michael, also known as the Archangel, acts as a defender of the church.
