New Years Eve was different this year for many people, with social distancing regulations limiting social plans that would normally have taken place.
Another group that was different for was a weird crowd forming outside St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
A&E Doctor Matthew Lee tweeted a clip of what appeared to be a group of protesters outside the hospital on New Years Eve. Most people in the footage appeared to have no masks and some were heard chanting “Covid is a hoax!” It is not clear if they were all protesters or if they were just gathering, but some signs were visible as well as many cans of beer clutched in their hands. .
Lee wrote: “I worked the last A&E SHO shift in NYE and got out of it. Hundreds of drunk and unmasked people in huge groups shouting ‘Covid is a hoax’, literally outside the building where hundreds are sick and dying. Why don’t people realize the severity of this pandemic? “
St Thomas’ Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in London. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked staff for “saving his life” after his hospitalization with Covid-19. On New Years Eve, Londoners were urged to avoid gathering in groups outdoors and to ban all domestic mixing indoors under Level 4 regulations.
Piers Morgan tweeted the clip and said he was “bubbling over” about it.
Other Twitter users described the images as “disgusting”, “selfish” and “heartbreaking”.
It is unclear when Level 4 restrictions in London or the rest of the country will be relaxed. Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock have both refused to rule out that severe restrictions can remain in place until Easter, until enough of the population have received the vaccine.
