The Dental Board of California is investigating the death of a young boy from Oakland, Dũng Lý, during a dental procedure last month.
The 4-year-old girl lost consciousness after being anesthetized for dental work done at Youthful Tooth on Edgewater Drive, in East Oakland, according to the GoFundMe page of one of her relatives.
He was pronounced dead at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital on April 25th.
The dental commission has confirmed the investigation, but all complaints and inquiries are confidential until the commission makes a decision. The coroner's office has not yet determined the cause of death, according to Ray Kelly, spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
"Our pathologist consults with experts in the dental field and has to perform many laboratory tests, including toxicology, before he can determine," he said.
On GoFundMe's page, Dũng's cousin juxtaposed the details of the child's death with descriptions of his life, as a happy boy who had recently left the United States with his family. The declared purpose of the page is to help his parents pay funerals and cremation. It had raised $ 8,300 on Friday.
In 2015, Caleb Sears of Albany, 6 years old, died in a dentist's chair while under general anesthesia for having a tooth removed. His family lobbied for a bill requiring dentists that a dedicated anesthesiologist monitor patients during procedures, which failed under intense pressure from large groups in the dental industry. The law allows untrained dental assistants to monitor patients' breathing.
Over the last seven years, Youthful Tooth has received at least 34 negative reviews on social networks, many of which mention the use of anesthesia or sedation of young patients.
No one responded to a voice message left at the Oakland Dental Office. A staff member reached on the practice site, in Pinole, declined to comment.
