Last week there were 50 New Mexicans on a waiting list for the ICU. This week that number has dropped, but there are still a handful of New Mexicans waiting in an intensive care bed.

Health officials are urging unvaccinated people to get vaccinated. The latest data shows that nearly 68% of New Mexicans are now fully immunized.

State epidemiologist Dr Christine Ross said she was not sure there is a “magic number” where herd immunity is reached and life can return to normal.

“I think the secretary [David] Scrase was really important that this is a global pandemic and that New Mexico is not an island, ”Ross said. “We are part of the United States and we are part of this global community that is really very well connected by air travel. , sea, land, etc. So I don’t think there is a specific number that I can cite and I think we’ll be dealing with that for a while. “

Health officials said it was still an unvaccinated pandemic. The cases of rupture remain only a small part of the total number of cases.
