JACKSON, Mississippi (WLBT) – A representative from Mississippi calls the recent spike in coronavirus cases “ridiculous.”

In a tweet on Monday, Representative Jeramey Anderson of Mississippi’s 110th District said the sudden increase was due to “consequences of non-vaccination and improper mask wearing.”

“Well Mississippi – you wanted it here it is,” Anderson wrote, attaching a tweet from the Mississippi Department of Health reporting 2,326 cases of COVID-19 over a 3-day period.

State health worker Dr Thomas Dobbs called this the “4th wave” of COVID-19. He also called this fourth wave “very sad indeed” and that it “should not be so”.

Anderson called the large number of new cases “ridiculous” and said the deaths “that will surely follow” were preventable.

He ended the tweet with the hashtags “PutYourMaskBackOn” and “GetVaccinated”.

On July 9, the MSDH warned anyone 65 years of age or older, or anyone with health problems, to avoid mass gatherings indoors even if they are vaccinated. This is because Mississippi remains the least vaccinated state in the country according to CDC data.

Dobbs said 93% of deaths and 94% of cases are in unvaccinated people. The vaccine is currently available to anyone over 12 years of age.
