Statue of Liberty-sized space rock among six asteroids set to ‘come close’ to Earth on Biden inauguration day – RT USA News

NASA has identified six asteroids that will set Earth ablaze on inauguration day. The space agency has called the plethora of space rocks near-Earth objects (NEOs), meaning they deserve close scrutiny.

“Near-Earth objects are comets and asteroids that have been pushed by the gravitational pull of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the vicinity of Earth”, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab says.

The tightest shave will see an asteroid come much closer to Earth than the Moon, with the largest passing visitor measuring up to 305 feet (93 meters) in width. In a quirk of eerie fate on inauguration day, the Statue of Liberty in New York City is also 93 meters tall.

All asteroids should fly safely on our planet and continue their journey into space. However, NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies will always closely monitor their progress, due to their “Close approach” status. Astronomers have a great interest in near-Earth objects, as they are largely unchanged since the creation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.

Biden will take office at noon on Wednesday at a ceremony in Washington, DC. Donald Trump’s presidency has seen the United States dramatically renew its interest in space exploration.

Trump has backed NASA’s goal of sending astronauts to Mars and has supported efforts to return to the moon. He also established the Space Force as an independent branch of the military.
