FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – A positivity rate still above 14%, more than 5,000 new cases and other record or near record numbers indicate that the COVID outbreak is not slowing down in Kentucky.

Of the new cases, 1,602 involved people 18 years of age and under. The numbers continued a trend for more than two weeks when the highest infection rates in the state were among those under 30.

The new cases brought the state’s total to 615,168.

The state also reported 36 new deaths, bringing the number lost since March 2020 to 7,971. Thursday’s deaths followed 30 deaths reported on Wednesday.

Thursday’s figures come after the state experienced a record week with 30,680 cases and health experts fear Labor Day rallies will further exacerbate the continuing outbreak.

The number of people hospitalized also continues to increase.

On Thursday, the number of people hospitalized rose to 2,479. This continued to increase from 2,356 on Tuesday and 2,424 on Wednesday. The number of people in intensive care fell slightly to 665 from 674 on Wednesday, but was still above the 661 on Tuesday.

The number of people on ventilators reached 434 on Thursday, up from 431 on Wednesday and 433 on Tuesday.
