ELKINS – After purchasing the Tygart Hotel in 2017, the Woodlands Development Group drew up a plan to restore the historic building and turn it into a boutique hotel.

Shortly after the purchase, Woodlands began renovating the six-story building in early 2018. Since then, while continuing to fund and fund, the project has fallen behind schedule. The project took a big step forward last week, however, when a group gathered at the hotel to discuss ideas and hopes for Elkins’ tallest residential building.

Local business owners, leaders of nonprofit organizations, and government officials gathered at the Tygart Hotel to review the current state of the building’s rehabilitation, which was constructed in 1907.

The proposed makeover is driven by loans and investments from the state and local banks, including Davis Trust Company, Freedom Bank and Pendleton Community Bank. Led by Woodlands, the $ 16 million project will result in a facility that will serve families, institutions and tourism in the area, according to a press release from Woodlands.

Woodlands Executive Director Dave Clark predicts that funding for the project will be completed by the end of 2021 and expects an 18-month construction period to begin in early 2022. Some of the construction has already started, as crews removed fittings, furniture and debris from the building’s recent use as an apartment complex.

When complete, the proposed redesign will attempt to capture the beauty and character of the ancient structure and the Elkins area today. The project will also seek to preserve the stories and memories of the Tygart Hotel’s long history, the statement said.

Mills Group, who is the architect of the project, attended last week’s meeting and presented some of their current plans and ideas for interior design. The group, based in Morgantown, collects feedback and ideas from the community.

Once the project is complete, Taylor Hospitality will take over the operations of the hotel. Taylor Hospitality is headquartered in Lexington, Virginia, and is a leading regional hotel management company. Its CEO, Sean Taylor, told those in attendance last week that his company “won’t market the hotel, they will market the city.”

Woodlands Development Group, which is a nonprofit and certified community housing development organization, purchased the Davis Avenue property for $ 700,000.
