COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sexually transmitted diseases are increasing across the country and, according to a new study, STDs are spreading faster here in South Carolina, then in most other states.
The study of health test centers analyzed data from the Center for Disease and Prevention's STD Surveillance Report 2017 to determine which states are most affected by these rising rates of disease.
The data show that South Carolina ranks third among the cities most affected by the growing number of sexually transmitted diseases or infections.
Palmetto State is one of the highest cases of chlamydia in the country, with 649.8 cases per 100 000 population. This compares with the national average of 528.8 cases.
South Carolina also ranks fourth among the highest gonorrhea cases (254.4 per 100,000 population). This national average is 171.9 cases.
South Carolina is part of a more general alarming trend in the United States. According to the CDC, doctors diagnosed more than 2 million people with syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia in 2016.
To prevent these numbers from continuing to increase, doctors recommend discussing sexual health with your partner. If this conversation makes you uncomfortable, you can always talk to your doctor.
Experts also recommend getting tested early and often because early diagnosis of an STI or STI can make all the difference.
