The # 2 best-selling game on Steam Wednesday, just behind pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077, is a high level action fighting game called Wingman Project. Created by a small team of Australia-based developers, it seems to rival the big-budget titles in the Ace Combat series – don’t call it a flight simulator.

Wingman Project is a combat flight action game with an emphasis on refined and polished gameplay, inspirations true to its roots and an engaging single player experience, ”says the developer Wingman ProjectThe Steam page of. “Perfect for those who don’t want a simulator experience, with ease of grip and play, up to those who want a challenging and fast-paced flight action game.”

Players take flight in first or third person, where you’ll take command of fourth- and fifth-generation fighters and attack aircraft, pulled from the arsenals of the modern world. The game includes over 20 aircraft, such as the AV-8B Harrier, F-14 Tomcat, and F-15 Eagle. There are even legacy planes, including the venerable F-4 Phantom, as well as many planes in the Russian inventory.

What’s really interesting is the opposition, which includes monstrous flying fortresses and towering ground mechs. The game’s fiction takes players along an alternate timeline, where modern airplanes are chased away by “guns and geothermal weaponry”. The game also doesn’t skimp on the dramatic lighting, which pervades all of its exotic surroundings – Yellowstone’s magma fields, redwood forests, and more.

The game was originally funded in 2017 as part of the Epic Games Unreal Dev Grant program. Fans later won over AU $ 114,000 – just under US $ 85,000 – through Kickstarter.

Wingman Project sports a full campaign, called Conquest Mode, which plays like a roguelike. Players will be responsible for purchasing airplanes and weaponry and maintaining a full combat force. The game is also compatible with modern HOTAS and Virtual Reality setups, although neither is required to enjoy the game.
