The Steelers didn’t land JJ Watt in free agency to unite the three Watt brothers into one team. But they worked with one of the three to create wiggle room for 2021.
By Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Pittsburgh restructured the contract of full-back Derek Watt to create $ 880,000 in ceiling space. With a projected salary cap of $ 182.5 million, every space counts.
Watt signed a three-year, $ 9.75 million contract with Pittsburgh last March. He appeared in 12 games for the Steelers in 2020, playing 47% of Pittsburgh’s special teams snaps. He also had 52 offensive shots – five percent of the team’s total. But the club only used him as a blocker, as Watt hasn’t had a reception or postponement in a season for the first time.
The full-back spent his first four seasons with the Chargers, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2016 Draft.
