OK, so a Newton-Garoppolo swap seems incredibly far-fetched.

Second, Garoppolo’s injury history suggests that the Patriots would want to keep Newton as a substitute / competition even if they brought back their 2014 second-round pick. Re-signing Newton doesn’t prevent New England from stopping. chasing another quarterback – whether Garoppolo or someone else – but that likely means he’ll be part of the Patriots’ QB Hall in some capacity this season.
Third, Newton was on the cusp of a free agent before joining New England. He could very easily have tested the open market, allowing the 49ers to get it without giving up Garoppolo or any other form of compensation. It’s hard to imagine San Francisco really wanting Newton, who struggled last season as the New England starting QB after Tom Brady left.
Nonetheless, it’s a fun, fantastically styled craft to throw at.

Yeah, the Garoppolo-Patriots talk probably goes too far. But, such is life when you have a familiar face, the uncertainty surrounding two quarterback situations and a little pause between free will and the draft.
