Thunderstorms that brought heavy rains for a short period on Wednesday afternoon caused flooding in several areas and calls for emergency teams to help those trapped in vehicles by deep water.
Power outages were also reported in Austintown in Mahoning County and in Salem in Columbiana County.
A spokesperson for 911 for Trumbull County said that between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., the dispatch center received numerous calls – mostly from Warren and Howland – about flooded roads and yards and people in flooded vehicles. People said water was seeping into the floors of the vehicles.
The spokesperson said fire crews should be called in for vehicles stuck in high water as drivers ventured onto the flooded roads of Idlywood, Genessee, Fairfield and Mahoning avenues in Warren. He said no injuries were reported.
Several motorists reported very high water – up to their knees – at the height of the storm at the intersection of Larchmont Avenue and Elm Road in Warren. Vehicles tried to get through the floods, but some got stuck in the middle and stalled.
Avenue des Pins had signs telling drivers not to pass due to high water.
The 911 spokesperson said the center had also received calls from residents in the south of the county who flooded basements.
Packard Park Pond in Warren overflowed onto the road preventing people from driving or walking,
FirstEnergy was reporting 3,000 power outages after the storm in the Mahoning Valley, most in Trumbull County in Warren, Champion and Warren Township.
Local officials have reported at city council meetings and township administrators that when it rains heavily for a short period of time, the storm sewers cannot keep up with the rain and the streets are flooded.
