In Hell, grenade is a key element, which gives you very real power by improving your abilities. The grenade also grants unimaginable power in the real world, at least if you are streamer Dylan “Rudeness“Beck. He harnessed the power of ancient fruits to thresh the final boss of the game not with a controller but with a literal grenade.
You read that right: a pomegranate. Yes, the same terribly acidic fruit you’d eat for vitamin C and antioxidants.
Beck is best known for playing games through creative methods and for concocting equally creative controllers. In 2019, for example, it plugged in a lightsaber toy at Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order which allowed movement-controlled Jedi-ing in Respawn’s loosely Souls-like action-adventure.
Spoilers follow for the end of Hell.
Earlier today, Beck posted a short clip on Twitter showing himself to face Hades, the game’s final boss, with a handful of grenade pieces. All the fruit is connected to Hell via Makey makey, an educational tool intended to teach the basic principles of computer technology but which, obviously, can be reused for other uses. Exhibit A: Replicate a mouse and keyboard setup and throw shit on the final boss of a brutal roguelike.

Hell is a ruthless game, where one wrong move can mean the end of a race, so using real fruit to beat the final boss can seem impossible. But that’s the draw. “I love trying to do seemingly impossible things,” Beck said. Kotaku via Twitter.
Sure enough, after 33 attempts – as many as it took to beat him without a pom, by the way – he finally won.
Developer Supergiant Games capture what we all think in a succinct tweet: “Hah, amazing !!”
It really comes down to the thread. If you look closely you will see Beck using all three Death Defiances – they are “extra lives” in Hell– talk – and you get dangerously close to the Lucky Tooth, an item that can bring you back to life with a small amount of health.
“I mis-counted the Death Defiances. I was too focused to even watch, ”Beck told me. “I was a little disappointed that I still had one life left, to be honest. I like a close call!
This isn’t the first time Beck has played Supergiant’s formidable roguelike with a grenade attached to wires. Just this week he posted a video on YouTube show the process. He made his way to the Barge of Death, halfway to Asphodel, before being taken out by one of those unusually irritating skeleton monsters. It happens to the best of us.
Yesterday, however, Beck appeared to be making significant progress. In another video posted on YouTube he released the Bone Hydra (sorry, Lernie) and had an awesome time at Elysium. This time he was killed by a tank. It also happens to the best of us.

So, what included today’s winning load? Regarding the weaponry, Beck used Varatha, the Eternal Spear, and opted for the Achilles aspect. With this aspect equipped, you can throw your spear and zip over it with the push of a button. In the typical pom-less game, this is easily one of the best aspects of weapons. Not only does it integrate seamlessly with the perks of nearly every Olympian, but it also gives you serious navigation control. That’s not to say it helped much in this situation, however.
“To be honest, I barely put it to good use, only because it got really hard to navigate between the different pieces of pomegranate,” Beck said. “I kept accidentally hitting songs that I didn’t intend to do, rushing and throwing when I didn’t want to. I found it easier to go all-in on the attack and the dash.
It rocked Poseidon’s dashboard as well, but encountered technical issues. At various points in the 90-second clip, the dash “button” (or, finally, the dash “an unappetizing piece of fruit”) pops out. He also chose Aphrodite’s cast, but doesn’t use it much, as throws are useless against Hades anyway. The rest of the build focused on the blessings of Zeus and Aphrodite, including their duo, Smoldering Air, which automatically charges special abilities. He also caught the one that increases the power of the pom poms. Naturally.
For this feat, Beck started a new file, which means he hasn’t activated any modifiers since the pact of punishment. He plans to tackle higher heat down the line. If it does, it will maximize the Extreme Measures modifier. (Each level of Heat of Extreme Measures changes the way regional bosses in the game behave. Raising it completely completely transforms the final fight against Hades. Even with a controller, this feat is considered one of the more difficult challenges. Game.)
Oh, and in case you were wondering, yeah, after whandle, he ate the pomegranate.
