SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio – Summit County's Department of Public Health is teaming up with the country's departments to warn residents to immediately stop using vapor and / or electronic cigarette devices as part of an alert national health authority for severe lung disease reported in at least a dozen states.
Health officials said residents of Ohio had been hospitalized for a serious lung disease. Hospitalized individuals reported using vaporized or buffered products (tablets, extracts or concentrates of marijuana).
The Department of Health strongly encourages residents of Summit County not to use vaping products, particularly those containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD).
Symptoms of lung disease include coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue. In some cases, the symptoms worsened over days or weeks and sometimes required hospitalization. Vape products and electronic cigarettes contain carcinogenic chemicals, heavy metals such as nickel, tin and lead, as well as chemical flavors related to serious lung disease.
Although the long-term effects of the use of these products on health are unknown, health officials said the immediate dangers of vaping are increasingly evident and alarming in Ohio.
Twenty-five states, including Ohio, have reported severe respiratory problems in adolescents and young adults with a history of vaping.
Healthcare providers whose patients are being treated for suspicion of lung disease should contact their local health department.
