An Easter Egg was found in the Super Mario 64 intro, revealing that the melody of the original Donkey Kong is present in the intro.
Almost 25 years since the release of Super Mario 64 and fans are still discovering new ones, like the fact that the game’s intro features a familiarly iconic song from Mario’s history. Although Super Mario 64 has been out for so long, every time the legendary platformer is re-released it is exposed to a whole new audience.
More recently, Super Mario 64 attracted attention with its release in Super Mario 3D All-Stars. This 3D Mario collection brought Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super mario galaxy old and new fans, the All-Stars collection being the first Super Mario Sunshine seen any sort of reissue. Super Mario 64 has been re-released and remade several times since its original release, but Super Mario 3D All-Stars gave the classic game a new chance to shine on one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles.

Now, 25 years later, composer HOUJIROU discovered that some of the intro notes of Super Mario 64 sound exactly like the signature notes in the original Donkey kong Game. HOUJIROU put those intro notes from the game into Garageband, and by speeding them up, the similarities became immediately clear. This shows that even then, Nintendo wanted to pay homage to Mario’s origins.
The original Donkey kong has been referenced numerous times during Mario’s lifetime. Given that this is where the iconic plumber began his career, it’s no surprise that Nintendo wants to pay homage to him. Donkey kong has been featured in games such as Nintendo Land and as a step in Super Smash Bros., and is also the basis of the Mario derivative series Mario vs. Donkey Kong. Donkey kong has acquired a legacy over the years as a starting point for Mario and remains one of Nintendo’s most iconic games.
Donkey kong is not the only one Mario entry which Super Mario 64 pays homage to one or the other. After collecting all 120 stars, Mario can find Yoshi at the top of Peach’s Castle. From these two references it is clear that Super Mario 64 was produced in homage to the old titles of Mario. Super Mario 64 he himself has since acquired a heritage of his own, but he would not be what he is today without what came before him. It’s these little Easter eggs that show the length of Mario’s legacy over the years, and that Super Mario 64, for all its legendary advances in the 3D genre, has always remembered its roots.
