PITTSBURGH – A deadly and drug resistant superbacticide fungus is slowly spreading to the United States, and it could only be a matter of time before it arrives in western Pennsylvania. .
The Candida auris fungus is considered a "serious threat to global health" by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"It's only a matter of time before these organisms spread," said Dr. Tom Walsh, Infectious Disease Specialist and Medical Quality Director at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, to Channel Partners 11 at TribLIVE. "We learn a lot from all the places where it exists."

The fungus has not yet been detected in Pennsylvania, but it has been diagnosed in 12 states, including New York and New Jersey.
The fungus is found mainly in hospitals and retirement homes, and primarily infects people with weakened immune systems. It is fatal in 1 in 3 patients, according to the CDC.
Until now, hospitals have found the best way to kill the fungus with bleach and ultraviolet light, reported NBC News.
