Svitolina qualifies for the semifinals of the US Open

Elina Svitolina reached the semifinals of the US Open for the first time with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Johanna Konta.

Seed No. 5 followed her first appearance in the last four of a major tournament at Wimbledon in July by returning directly to Flushing Meadows, where she will face either six-time champion Serena Williams or Wang Qiang.

The players exchanged three consecutive breaks in the third set, but Svitolina played a cleaner game than Konta, who made 35 unforced errors compared to 13 on Svitolina.

The 16th seed, Konta, was trying to reach his first semifinal US Open. She reached this round in the other three major tournaments.
