Improvement is a goal that Swami strives to achieve from week to week. If you get complacent then you have tunnel vision and you don’t feel any need to improve. The All-Knowing-One are always on the hunt for that missed stat, the name of a player they might have missed, or the team’s overall performance, something that athletes can rely on.
The local teams have improved and Swami wants to do the same. Let’s see how he’s doing this week:
ALPENA (0-4) at TRAVERSE CITY WEST (3-1) – Friday – 7 p.m. – The Wildcats hit the road, but it’s easy. The Wildcats were carefully overpowered by Cadillac, 37-6, while West suffered their first loss to Traverse City Central last week. Let’s say West is after someone and the Wildcats are looking for respectability.
The quarterback reins went to senior Ryan Voltz, who scrambled most of the night, completing 8 of 12 attempts for 133 yards. Voltz joined Brady Niedzwiecki for Alpena’s only score.
A combination of passing and rushing from Cadillac kept the Wildcats’ defense on the field for most of the game. The Wildcats will see more of it tonight as the Titans used the combination of the two in their wins.
The Titans’ only form of offense last week came when quarterback Brandon Konchek found Will Gaston twice for the only points West scored in the 42-14 loss. Swami just has the feeling that West will come out with guns tonight.
This will be Traverse City’s final football road trip, as Traverse City teams head to a more competitive conference. For the Wildcats, this will be good news as they have yet to break through the 24-attempt win column against West.
Swami Sez: Traverse City West 42, Alpena 14.
ALCONA (2-2) at AU GRES (4-0) – Friday – 7 p.m. – Both schools are doing better a year ago. Au Gres scored a victory last year and now he is at 4-0. Alcona entered 8-a-side football not knowing what to expect, but is doing remarkably well.
The Wolverines scored 48 points in their last win. Quarterback Mason VanSickle had another great night throwing the ball for 319 yards and four touchdowns. The duo of Gabe Metzger and Evan Saunders totaled 297 yards. Keagan Bender completed the air attack, rushing for 179 yards, two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Bender was also a defensive force with 16 tackles and one fumble.
Alcona stepped on undefeated Inland Lakes but failed in an exciting game. A touchdown pass from Garrett Somers to Michael Basner got the Tigers tied 7-7 from the start. The Bulldogs gained ground, before the Tigers charged, with a touchdown reception from William Liebler and a tackle-breaking run from Basner to bring Alcona down to less than four points. But the Bulldogs’ final TDs made the difference.
Swami thinks the Tigers need to consolidate some minor details to turn this season into a winning season. The road doesn’t get any easier against the Wolverines, but their defense is capable. Swami thinks that the Tigers with their alignment have an excellent chance of being upset.
Swami Sez: At Gres 35, Alcona 24.
POSEN (0-4) at ROGERS CITY (4-0) – Friday – 7 p.m. – With fanfare, the Hurons are on the rise, and that’s how they like it. Rogers City allowed just one touchdown in the opener against Brethren and has thrown the white ball ever since. Posen has been within reach of a few wins, but just can’t take a break. In the last loss to Mio, the Vikings scored enough points to win, but turnovers proved to make the difference.
Two weeks ago, the Hurons used the back kick to take control of Onaway. In a 32-0 shutout against Bessmer last week, the defense covered the gaps between the offensive line, allowing little distance to the center.
Posen’s offense rounded off, but it looks like the defense is lagging behind as Mio took advantage of the pass. Swami says it will be a real test for the Vikings against a very stingy Huron defense. If the Vikings are unable to move the ball in the first two sets, it could mean a long night for Posen.
Swami Sez: Rogers City 28, Posen 8.
HALE (2-2) to HILLMAN (1-3) – Friday – 7 p.m. –Hale ended a two-game losing streak with a one-sided win over Atlanta last week and he wants to continue that streak against the Tigers.
Robert Rosebrugh was the main cog in the Eagles offense, rushing for 137 yards and throwing for four touchdowns. Zach Koepke led the way on the ground with 78 yards, while Brandon Maddox caught two touchdown passes.
There was no retirement by the Hillman Tigers against Au Gres. Quarterback AJ Jones threw just six passes, one of the accomplishments being a 56-yard touchdown to sophomore Treton Taratuta. The Vikings used a trio of backers to rush for 226 rushing yards, with Sean Henigan leading on 24 carries for 141 yards and a touchdown. Jeff Klein managed to score a point on one of his 12 races. Owen Moulten had the remaining yardage in seven races.
Swami thinks Hillman is made for a good team, the only downside has been the offense and the defense has not been on the same page. Ultimately this game is hard to call and it could boil down to Hillman’s home advantage as the difference.
