Swami and his family made a rare road trip on Friday evening to Petoskey. The All-Knowing-One had seen Northmen Stadium from the outside, but getting inside was quite an experience with a bowl-shaped pitch, no obstacle seats, good lighting, gigantic changing rooms with a tunnel and a gigantic dashboard with all the bells and whistles. We’re a long way from the old Curtis Field. The Omniscient remembers making those trips there on the Alpena Catholic Central Bus.
Memories are what life is. Football teams and athletes today create memories they can tell their grandchildren about. Swami still has vivid images of those four years as if it had happened today. Let’s see if All-Knowing can move forward quickly until this week.
ALPENA (0-5) at GAYLORD (2-3) – Friday – 7 p.m. – The Wildcats are back on the road hoping for a different result. Alpena faced Traverse City West one last time and lost 40-0.
The Wildcats were limited to 50 rushing yards, although quarterback Ryan Voltz had 11 attempted passes for 115 yards. Brady Niedzwiecki and Colt Gray were his main targets and totaled 74 yards. Position on the pitch was scarce, with the Titans enjoying a good position on the pitch and Alpena struggled to get things done.
Gaylord faced bad luck as special teams issues led to a 22-0 loss to Cadillac. Anytime you give the opponent opportunities to score on your eight and 12 yard line, it puts you quickly behind the eight ball.
Running back Austin Vanderveer is the main running back, but quarterback Caleb Aungst is also doing his part. Here’s the big if in the equation for the Wildcats: If they’re confined on the outside, it’ll make it easier on the inside defensive line. It could be a game the Wildcats can win. It could be a big if for them, and the Wildcats will need to play a perfect game.
Swami Sez: Gaylord 21, Alpena 12.
ROGERS CITY (5-0) at ALCONA (2-3) – Friday – 7 p.m. – The Express Huron has kept the 16-quarter shutout streak intact. The Tigers are just looking for a win to get back on track.
The Tigers managed to come back to 32-20 at halftime last week, but that hard work was wasted in the second half as Alcona had no answer for the 40-point push or Au Gres quarterback Mason VanSickle.
Alcona quarterback Garrett Somers, as he has done in previous games, put the Tigers on the board with a Gavin Walker touchdown. Mike Basner came through defenders bouncing on the outside for two goals and Alcona was on hand. VanSickle made sure the Tigers didn’t come close to his arm.
The Hurons wasted no time securing a lead and the defense gave the offense more scoring opportunities. With the shutout of Posen, the Hurons kept their opponents scoreless for four games.
Swami thinks this might be the best test for the Hurons since week 1.
Swami Sez: Rogers City 28, Alcona 16.
MIO (4-1) at ATLANTA (1-4) – Friday – 7 p.m. – Atlanta has very little to show for its season at this point. But last week against Pellston was encouraging as Atlanta had their best points production of the season. Quarterback TJ Currie led the offense until the Huskies’ first touchdown, hitting a wide open Dakota Stevens. Huskies running back Trace Juergens broke tackles en route to the game to tie a touchdown. But it was the Hornets who scored the last points to snatch victory in Atlanta.
Mio was a force against Whittemore-Prescott. Quarterback Austin Fox completed just seven assists, but three to Lewis Kuffel and Nathan Hurst found the end zone. He set up the rushed play led by Seth Spahn with 80 yards and two scores.
The Thunderbolts defense was another story, Dallas Long had 12 unassisted tackles, plus Spahn and Kuffel added eight saves.
The Huskies might have signs of a reversal in their season, but that was against a race-oriented Cardinal team. Enter the high-flying Thunderbolts, capable of hurling lightning from anywhere in the field.
Swami Section: Mio 42, Atlanta 12.
ONAWAY (2-3) at HILLMAN (2-3) – Friday – 7 p.m. – Definitely a decisive game; a win keeps you in the hunt for the playoffs, a loss makes it a lot harder. Looking at the Cardinals’ schedule, Onaway should be banking on a win.
The Tigers used a rock-solid defense to sidestep a two-point conversion to tie the game. Hale’s defense got a huge save on a short court, which resulted in Hillman kicking with 50 seconds left. The end result didn’t work in Hale’s favor as the Tigers recovered the pigskin and came away with a 22-20 victory.
Hillman reversed the rushed attack, with a heavy attack. Quarterback TJ Jones received a touchdown pass from Trenton Taratuta and set the tone for the game. Jones came back with one of his own and a quick hitter from Sean Henigan completed a 22-8 lead at halftime.
Onaway saw his attack stopped by a stronger team from Gaylord St. Mary. Swami says that the Cardinals must take advantage of the opposition to give them a chance to win. The All-Knowing-One saw Onaway catch up, but sometimes the hole is too big and the errors only get bigger.
Swami Sez: Hillman 24, Onaway 8.
