SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Fraternities and sororities will no longer be allowed at Swarthmore College.

The president of the school, Valerie Smith, made the announcement on Friday.

This comes after the only two fraternities of the private liberal arts college of the Philadelphia suburbs have decided to dissolve despite the outrage aroused by leaked internal documents from one of the organizations.

The documents, written between 2012 and 2016, contained disparaging comments about women, the LGBTQ community, and jokes about sexual assault. The two campus publications that published the documents Phi Psi, Voices and The Phoenix, said they were disclosed anonymously.

As a result of the publication of the documents, dozens of students occupied Phi Psi's home on campus and called for the closure of the two fraternities.

Smith says that the only sorority of the school can continue with its current members until the spring semester 2022, but can not recruit or initiate new members.
