STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – The Swedish Public Health Agency said on Monday it was recommending the use of Pfizer-BioNTech’s Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 12 to 15, opting against Moderna’s rival Spikevax .

The European Medicines Agency approved the use of Comirnaty in May, while Spikevax was given the green light for children over 12 in July.

“Overall, we see reasons to choose the vaccine that we know best and that is the most proven when it comes to immunizing children between 12 and 15 years old”, Anders Tegnell, head of department and epidemiologist of State to said the Health Agency.

The agency said there was more data on the use of Comirnaty on children.

“This is why Spikevax is not recommended for the youngest age group in Sweden,” the agency said in a statement.

In September, the agency said children aged 12 and older would be offered a COVID vaccination starting October 11.
