The number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea and syphilis, increased by 28% and 19% respectively in Norway between 2016 and 2017.

This development has long been a concern for the Norwegian health authorities. Twenty years ago it was reported that gonorrhea was virtually extinct and that cases of syphilis were rare in Norway. Since then, the infection has increased from year to year, despite the authorities' alerts. In 2017, 1,399 cases of gonorrhea were reported, compared to 1,096 in 2016. For syphilis, the corresponding figures are 233 cases in 2017 compared to 188 in 2016.

Gonorrhea and syphilis are relatively easy to treat if the infection is detected in time. Untreated, diseases can have serious consequences, especially childhood.
