Tedros Adhanom is very concerned about his visit to Congo.
The number of Ebola-related deaths in northeastern Congo-Kinshasa is now more than 40. And the WHO warns that violence in the region promotes the spread of the dreaded disease.
Scarcely another home in Ecuador in the west had been successfully fought until Ebola was found in North Kivu province on August 1. And now, more than 40 deaths are reported in the Kivu region, while another 20 people are infected.
Tedros Adhanom, head of the World Health Organization (WHO), has just returned from Congo to Geneva. He fears that the state of war, partly in Kivu, is "an environment conducive to the spread of Ebola". He therefore pleads for a ceasefire to prevent the spread of infection.
He says that he was worried about the trip and now:
– Actually, I'm even more worried.
The bleeding disorder has appeared ten times in Congo-Kinshasa since its discovery in 1976. It derives its name from the country's Ebola River.
