Kennelhosta is really not a disease, but a collective name about the symptoms that can be caused by several different infectious agents.

Symptoms are coughing and sneezing, which usually decrease after a week or two, but may last longer in rare cases. The disease is extremely contagious and has an incubation period of 4 to 5 days.

– The pet owner sometimes experiences it as if the dog was sitting in the throat while he was trying to get up. The host attacks range from mild to so powerful that the dog suffers from suffocation or vomiting, "says veterinarian Ylva Trygger.

Because Kennelhosta is If contagious, it is important to isolate dogs with symptoms. This is especially true in kennels, at dog racing or on farms where many dogs stay at the same time.

– The infection is spread easily between bowls of food, through the hands and clothes that have received the saliva of a sick dog. A dog that has suffered must have been cleaned properly with a disinfectant, and then left blank for at least a week to prevent further infection, "says Ylva Trygger.

Kennelhosta usually needs not treated, except when the cough is so powerful that cough medicines are given. On the other hand, follow-up diseases, such as pneumonia, can pose a risk to puppies and young dogs.

"There is a kennel cough vaccine, but it is not 100 percent because many viruses and bacteria are involved," says Ylva Trygger.
