A proven case of the hepatitis E version in rats has been discovered for the first time in humans.
The infected, a 56-year-old man from Hong Kong, presented with abnormal liver values after a liver transplant. It is thought that he was infected by eating foods that came into contact with rats, and the man is recovering from being treated for the virus.
The fact that the infection can be transmitted from a rat to a human has not yet been proven and, according to the University of Hong Kong, the study is of major importance for public health.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the human variant of hepatitis E, which is often spread by contaminated water, affects about 20 million people each year.
