About one in ten women suffer from endometriosis, a disease that causes the growth of the uterine lining outside the uterus. Many patients suffer from persistent pain and are treated with morphine-based preparations that can be addictive and lead to long periods of sick leave. For some women, the pain is so intense that TENS, massage and over-the-counter medications are not enough to ease the pain. Now, the University Hospital is launching a new study in which more active rehabilitation efforts are being piloted to allow more women to return to work. The study starts this spring.
– Current support for rehabilitation is not enough for a large group of women with endometriosis. We see that many fall back on sick leave. We hope drug treatment with longer-term, work-focused rehabilitation will reduce sick leave and help women feel better, she says. – Long periods of sick leave often means that you are alone and you lose contact with your friends. Some women are forced to move to their parents because they can not afford to buy their own apartment. With more qualified support for a long time, we hope that more women will be able to maintain or regain their working capacity.

When cells begin to develop, they cause inflammation that can in turn lead to pain, scarring and adhesions. Over time, the tissue of the endometrium is encapsulated by the body's defense mechanisms and endometriosis or cysts form.
It is common for the first symptoms to appear in adolescence. The disease has great heredity.
Academic Hospital is a the country's first university hospital with many different roles: county hospitals, specialty hospitals, teaching hospitals and research hospitals. Clinical research is conducted in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the University of Uppsala. Pernilla Åsenlöf, professor at the University of Uppsala, is responsible for the project, which is funded by the Swedish Research Council and AFA Försäkring.
In the study, women are selected two groups, one receiving traditional pain management and the rehabilitation coordinator's support to develop a return to work plan. The second group also receives supervision and training in communication and problem solving in the workplace, as well as physical training to manage priority tasks. In addition, the employer will receive training to actively support long-term return to work. In summary, the researchers wish to test a new model through the ongoing efforts of the rehabilitation coordinator and the employer, who establish a clear plan and professional training tailored to the wishes and conditions of the person.
