Avalanche Studios has become known for its great open-game worlds, where the ability to freely explore diverse geographical areas is central. Even the new "Zero Generation" is an open world of play, but located in a rather unusual place: Sweden.

We have received many responses in the style of "which is good that it is not the US Midwest or Eastern Europe," said game director Emil Kraftling, about consumer reactions.

The development team traveled to Sweden and flew over cities and landscapes using drones, but also visited the Royal Library in Stockholm and flipped through old furniture catalogs to create a authentic feeling of Sweden from the 1980s.

We have places that look like the archipelago of Stockholm, we have the plain of Närke where I grew up, we have the west coast with the fishing camps. We tried to create a microcosm of Sweden. It becomes almost a tourist directory for international actors, says Emil Kraftling.

Players can also expect free add-ons and add-ons that will cost money in the future. Avalanche is already working on new content even though the game only came out on Tuesday.

Although the great robots of the Swedish dystopia of the 80s can be considered as a relatively narrow visual area, the Avalanche is not the only one in this genre. The artist Simon Stålenhag is made known by his gloomy Swedish landscapes in which robots or machines play a leading role. The question of what inspired Avalanche to create "Zero Generation" was posed, among others, by Stålenhag himself.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

According to Emil Kraftling, Avalanche has never had the interest of "plagiarizing or treating unfairly a colleague in the industry".

There are similarities, but I hope that players will feel that it is an avalanche game and not a game of steel hook, because it is not the case, he says.

Kraftling emphasizes instead that for the developers, it was about creating "a game about our childhood".

Many in the team grew up in the 80s and the atmosphere was then very special. The feeling of "war is coming" in a tense atmosphere where the whole nation was waiting for the invasion, he says.

Simon Stålenhag writes in an email to TT that he has not changed his mind since he commented on the subject on Twitter this summer. He also wanted the similarities to be recognized, while emphasizing that "loans, references and modifications of works by other artists are an important part of the art".
