Aftonbladet violated the good practices of the publicist when the newspaper last fall announced that a bus driver had shown porn movies in a school bus. Something that caused an inaccurate public injury to the driver.
It is on October 26, 2017 that the newspaper posted on its website a telegram TT entitled "The driver showed porn movies in a school bus". TT telegram resolved in its entirety:
"On the screens of the school bus, a porn movie was screened. The children, the youngest ten, were" terrified "and" mumbled "when they returned home to Y-town [ortsnamn angivet] in Västerbotten, reports Norran.
An adult passenger asked the bus driver to turn off the film, which he did. The driver, employed by the bus company X [namn angivet], was interrupted with immediate effect.
– The film was found on the bus. There is traffic in the queue, so someone may have forgotten the movie there, but that does not excuse the driver. It will not even show movies in the online traffic, says the CEO of the bus company, AA [namn angivet] the newspaper.
X school [namn angivet], from which the children traveled, will report the incident to the police ".
Later, it turned out that the film presented was a romantic comedy.
The notifier: psychiatric disorder caused
The publications were reported by the bus driver. The author of the notification believes that it was easy to identify the designated bus driver. The designated company had only one employee responsible for driving schoolchildren between the two stations.
The magazine did not know what movie it was and how long it had been shown. It was possible to interpret the article because the film was screened throughout the trip. The newspaper had based on the wording of the text the statements of truth.
The publication caused tremendous mental suffering to the bus driver and his family as a sex offender. In the comments of the article, the driver was described as a potential predator to give birth to children. Even the statements of the employer reflected this image.
Newspaper Answer: No Appointments
The newspaper replied that it appeared from the article that there was at least one adult passenger on board and that the bus was in the online traffic. It was obviously a regular bus that also transported schoolchildren. It was not excluded that such a bus be driven by different drivers for the simple reason that one could get sick, go on vacation or be away for another reason.
According to its own website, bus company X had about 30 employees and owned 26. The company was represented in several locations and had its headquarters in Z-town [ortsnamn angivet]. The newspaper estimated that the driver could not be identified if you did not already know.
The newspaper responded that the TT telegram was automatically published on the newspaper's website. This was not someone who had chosen the telegram or who had rubbed it, but they had been published with the title TT.
PCO Evaluation: Insufficient Advertising Damage
The current telegram is written by TT and has been automatically published on the newspaper's website. This means that TT, in agreement with the newspaper, publishes its telegram on the website without previewing the newspaper's employees. Thus, although the publisher has not had the opportunity to re-read the text before its publication, this publisher, and not the telegram agency, assumes full responsibility for what has been published, both legally and ethically.
The person responsible for driving children to and from school has confidence in parents, schools and municipalities. This means that the public interest has pushed the newspaper to write if that happened.
However, the general interest of the driver's identity is limited. This, added to the serious allegations contained in the article, means that the newspaper must be very cautious to prevent the people involved from being directed to a wider circle.
The magazine has in this case published the following identification information. The bus driver is a man, this is a school bus that connects X school from X-town to Y-town and is used by bus company X.
The data can be considered as weak. However, the notifier pointed out that he alone is driving the current route. This could mean that the designation is strengthened, provided that the person who reads the article also knows this circumstance.
There is no reason to think that the newspaper intended to report the author of the notification. However, this is a publication on the newspaper's website that is potentially very widespread. The information contained in the article and the fact that only the author of the notification who operates the current route mean that it was possible for a circuit larger than those who knew otherwise whether it was to understand from whom the article was referring.
For press releases, it is necessary to publish violent information about a designated person. The mission of the OP is not to try to determine what is true or false in a publication. Whatever evidence the magazine had at the time of publication, information that a bus driver was playing pornographic movies for children who were not rewriting.
The indicative data relating to the statement that the bus driver should have shown a porn movie caused the author of the notification an inaccurate public injury.
The opinion committee of the press Evaluation
Aftonbladet said in the report that the article had been published. This is good, but can not reasonably mitigate the damage caused to the advertising by the bus driver. The press opinion committee therefore agrees with the evaluation of the OP and wishes to underline in particular the following points. For all publications – even those published automatically – it is the editor responsible for the magazine that is fully responsible. In this, one must also let the designated person speak.
It is an abridged version of the decision of the press committee. The full decision is available on the PO / PON website www.po.se.
