Researcher He Jiankul has managed to release DNA on a pair of binoculars whose father is HIV-positive, he said at a medical conference in Hong Kong. The girls were born in November.

Eight volunteers, composed of HIV-positive fathers and HIV-negative mothers, were enrolled in the trial. A couple has since jumped.

– I'm sorry for the leaked result. The clinical trial was halted because of the current situation, he said.

The CRISPR-Cas9 technology used by He Jinakul hoped to prevent diseases through genetic modification. However, there are concerns about security and ethics.

"The Pandora's Box has been opened," wrote in an open letter to more than 100 researchers, most of them Chinese, on Tuesday about the consequences of genetic modifications on human embryos.

The Chinese authorities have also ignored the trials and the institution to which He Jinakul is affiliated, the Southern Science and Technology University of Shenzhen, has stated that ethical states have been put forward.
