The risk of complication during an operation is twice as high in a person with a risk of alcohol. Especially for those who have been drinking the last weeks before surgery. Among other things, alcohol affects the load on the heart and vessels, with a risk of increased blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure.
Swedish treatment centers, primary care and hospital care therefore have to work together and organize for patients to undergo a non-alcoholic operation, ie the patient is completely sober four to eight weeks before surgery. The patients themselves should also ask for information about non-alcoholic surgeries. This would halve the risk of complications, doctors write.
